My approach to treating back pain is starting with relieving the pain with modalities such as therapeutic massage, electric stimulation and or heat to get your nervous system relaxed enough to move your spine towards better alignment. Then back pain is best treated with a hands-on approach to correct the problem by mobilizing and depending on the condition manipulating the spine. I follow up the alignment with exercises to strengthen the back and core with movement specific to your weaknesses, stretches to your tight and possibly spasmed muscles, and nerve glides to your pinched nerves. The treatment continues with self-mobilizations so you can start to tackle the alignment on your own as well as exercises and stretches to perform at home/ gym so you make better and faster gains. I like to finish off a course of physical therapy for the back with patient education focused on making sure you know all your options for managing your condition so you can take the torch and run with it. With that said I can also modify treatment of your back pain to what you like. If you like a more hands on approach with quick alignment techniques or more gentle/ slower approach, or a more hands off approach. There are a lot of options for manual therapy of the back in physical therapy; we will evaluate your back condition to determine which techniques would have the most benefit based off your condition, research, clinical decision making, and of course your needs/wants as the patient.
